Dr. OLIVIA HOWE

Dr. Olivia Howe is a postdoctoral researcher at the Faculty of Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences at KU Leuven. She is responsible for the Introduction to Sports Ethics and Integrity discourses module on the Erasmus+ funded Master Degree in Sport Ethics and Integrity (MAiSI) program.
Olivia is a sports ethicist, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy (2018) and a Master in Philosophy (MPhil, 2020) from Cardiff University. In 2020 she moved to the Czech Republic to undertake her PhD in Sports Ethics under the supervision of Prof. Jim Parry and Prof. Irena Martínková, graduating in 2024. The thesis was titled Oppression versus Empowerment: A Philosophical Analysis of Female Participation in Sport, and applied the philosophies found in Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex to women’s sport.
She is published on several topics, including women in Formula 1 racing, rowing, discussions on feminine movement, ethical concerns surrounding menstrual tracking applications in sport, and sports coaching from a care ethics perspective. Her interests are broad-ranging, but are mostly concerned with feminist approaches to the philosophy of sport, applied ethics, gender, discrimination, safeguarding, governance, coaching, and bioethics.
Olivia is a reviewer for several academic journals, including the Journal for the Philosophy of Sport, Sports Coaching Review, and the Sport in History journal. She is also a committee member of the British Philosophy of Sport Association.
